Architecture Students’ Team from University of Widya Kartika had reached an achievement. Shinta Indah P. N., Yakub Andrew Muliadi, and Amelia Liviany had become the finalists in Design Challenge Cipta Karya 2013, regional competition organized by Public Works of Human Settlements and Spatial Planning Deaprtment for East Java Province. The series of events that began on April 1 until June 14, 2013 had given valuable experience for the participants.

Shinta Indah P. omitted that there was doubt occured when she knew the information about the contest. It was because, with the theme of Innovation in the Settlement of Economical and Mutifunction Rusunawa, participants had to create something new in a space design. Shinta felt that she was not going to able to answer the challenge. However, deep inside her heart, she was eager to participate in order to measure her own ability.

“Instantly, thanks to our hard work and the help from lecturers in proposal assistanceand budget planning, our design proposal could be completed. We were relieved and hoping to enter the big 60. Although there was only a little hope, but we remain hopeful, “she said.

Apparently, Shinta’s and her team’s work went into big 60 and got rid dozens of works from other participants. During the presentation, her team explained the concept of “PUSH and PULL.” In the Big 60 judging, Uwika teams had to deal with a number of participants from the campuses which incidentally had been famous in Surabaya. However, the design creations which were made were capable of getting rid of others 50 competitors to enter the top 10 finalists. “Apparently, we can beat participants from the most prestigious private universities in Surabaya. It is very impressive for us. And we think qualifying up in the top 10 is a gift from God, “said the student of 4th semester this cheerfully. In the top 10 finalists, Uwika’s team met with the 4 other finalists who were from UB, 4 finalists of ITS-Architecture, and one finalist from ITATS.

Even so, Uwika’s team had to accept the fact that their work had not been able to deliver them to be the winner. “We felt pretty disappointed, because we could not be able to carry out the name of the University of Widya Kartika, especially Architecture Department. However, if we look from the positive side, we got more experience by following the contest. How we can attract the experts to pay attention toour architecture works,” she explained.

For their achievement, The Head of Uwika’s Architectural Engineering Department Ririn Dina Mutfianti, S.T., M.T., felt proud. According to her, the design that the team had created design that was quite good. The team could work together well during the process. “Their openness to criticism was good too. Totality is quite good. Good exposure. Though not perfect, what that had been done was the best that could be done,” she said.

She considered, the team’s failure in reaching the top-3 was not a serious problem. The 4th semester students’ design and mindset could be considered better than the other students who were in the 6th semester.

“The spirit of the students in preparing to compete made us give two thumbs up. Salute. This defeat made them grow, not to fall down. We believe that the opportunity will come again later, and for us the lecturers, they are champions,”cshe said.

This hooded professors also expressed gratitude to the team’sadvisors, the lecturers who had helped in terms of assisting the work of the student. “Thank you for the support given, either energy, ideas, thoughts and so on. Without their support, this event would not be able to be done. Once again, thanks a lot,” she concluded.
