The Rector of the University of WidyaKartika (Uwika) Dr. Josua Murpin Sembiring, SE, M.Sc., received a group of representatives of Papuan students. They discussed about education situation in the city of Surabaya, which is one the main destinations for Papua high school graduates to continue their study.
Taking place in Uwika’s Rector’s office, the meeting on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 was done pleasantly. “We’re the same. The same Indonesians. So we should learn and appreciate each other, “said Dr. Murpinto open the discussion.
As a person who ever lived long enough in Papua, Dr. Murpinconsidered that the potential for the youth in Papua to participate in building the area is still widely opened. Therefore, high school graduates must be able to enhance themselves to be well educated individuals. The goal is to be able to contribute to develop the area. One of them could be reached by studying seriously.
However, some obstacles will certainly be a challenge for students from outside the region. One of them comes from the lecturer. Dr. Murpinsaid, whether consciously or not, we still can find lecturer in Java who uses local language (Java) while teaching. In fact, there are students from different regionswho attend classes. “It will cause discomfort. Or at least, the students who come from different area with different local language will find difficulties in understanding the material well, “continued the man who is also the Chairman of Kopertis VII’s Lecturers Communication Forum in East Java. It was agreed by the students. They really felt what Dr. Murpin had told. In some classes they followed, there were lecturers who explained in Javanese Language. “Nengkono, neng kene, (there, here),” said one of the men whichmade the whole room laugh.
Therefore, Dr. Murpin hoped, the lecturers in Java, especially in Uwika, can always use good Indonesian when they teach. Thus, all students can understand the material presented well.
After having some chats and taking a break, the students who came from a number of campuses in Surabaya spent time to look at Uwika’s facilities. Accompanied by Head Uwika’s Admission, DeasyMarianeKaunangIsabela, SIP., They checked rooms in Uwika one by one, starting from classrooms, library, hall, Students’ Activities Unit’s rooms, to Uwika’s LanguageFaculty‘s lecturers’ room.
