Learning something did not have to be seriously frowned and done in the classroom. There were fun ways that you could do to acquire new knowledge. One was to combine knowledge with games.

It was the thing which had been done by Widya Kartika University Surabaya’s (UWIKA) Chinese Department. Some time ago, one of the UWIKA’sstudy concentration held a Mandarin Rally Games Contest. The theme was Fun Race for high school students in Surabaya. The activity was a mean of promoting and introducing Chinese culture and language to senior high school students. In a fun way, high school students were expected to be interested in learning Mandarin more.

The event was held on Saturday, November 16th, 2013 at 13:30-finish at East Coast Mall, Surabaya. Competition Rally Game called “??” was followed by 105 senior high school students in Surabaya. They consisted of 35 teams of 3 persons.

The competition was divided into two rounds, the preliminary round and final round. Preliminary round had 12 posts. The game was about learning Chinese language culture,for example, participants were given a place and they had to answer about the steps leading to the place. In addition, there was also game called cai dong zuo. What is it? One member of the team had to demonstrate the picture on a cardwhile the others had to guess it in Chinese.

In another post there was also a game of snakes and ladders, where the representative of each teams became the piece and then went according to the number that was set by the dice. If they got a picture of a letter box, the team had be ready to answer questions. The duration of the game was only for 8 minutes. The team who was closest to the finish became the winner. There were many other fun games in each post .

35 teams were reduced to 10 teams considering the highest scores. Those 10 teams would advance to the next round. In this advanced race, participants’ knowledge about Chinese celebrations and historical places would be tested. Each team had to find 10 key words which were spread to various stores in East Coast Mall building. The team that had found it was given 10 minutes to prepare a story using the words.

Then, for 3-5 minutes, the participants had to be able to tell the words on stage in Chinese. The judges in charge were Chinese Language Lecturers both native and local from University of Widya Kartika Surabaya.

At the end of the race, the judges had to decide 3 teams with the highest score. Of the three finalists, there were two teams that had the same total scores.The first was from St. Louis I and Petra 2 Senior High Schools. Then, the judges held fast round to decide who would be 1st and 2nd Champions. As a result, St. Louis I was deserved the first winner, Petra 2 got the 2nd place, and Ciputra High School got the 3rd. the 1st Champion got 1.25 million rupiah, second place 1 million rupiah, and third place 750 thousand rupiah. They were also given trophies and certificates.

The organizers hopes, through this race, participants could learn that learning Mandarin Language and Chinese culture was a very interesting thing to do. In addition, these activities could also help to introduce UWIKA to the public.

The same thing was also done by UWIKA’s Accounting Department. On the same day, the study program through its Accounting Student Association (HIMA) held an accounting competition for high school students in East Java. The purpose of these competitions was to promote and introduce the Accounting Department of UWIKA among high schools in East Java. In addition, UWIKA’s Accounting Department wanted to establish cooperation with high schools in East Java. The hope was that high school students became interested in accounting and wanted to continue their study in UWIKA’s Accounting Department.

Participants who took part in the race were 28 teams from high schools in East Java. Each team consisted of 3 persons. They had to fight to pass 3 rounds, the preliminary, semifinals, and finals. In the preliminary round, participants had to obtain maximum points by visiting checkpoints around campus. In each checkpoint, there would be questions that had be answered to earn points.

In the semifinal round, 16 teams with the highest scores should complete the challenges in the next posts. Different levels of difficulty had been prepared by the committee. The system in the semi-finals race was not the same as the preliminary round. Each post was named with countries in the world. If participants visited the post, they had to pay an amount of money related to the currency of the country with different rates.

In the final round, five teams would be selected to answer questions given by IAI (Indonesian Institute of Accountants) and presented in front of a panel of judges consisting of UWIKA’s Accounting lecturers. 1st Place obtained a cash prize of $ 4 million, IAI Trophy, scholarship 750.000 rupiah scholarship/person, and certificates. 2nd Place was awarded with 3 million, a trophy, 500.000 rupiah scholarship/person, and certificates, while the 3rd winnertook home 2 million rupiah in cash, trophy, 250.000 rupiah scholarship/person, and certificates.

For the 4th place, the committee also gave a cash prize of 600 thousand rupiah, and 400 thousand rupiah for the 5th. Each winner also obtained certificates.
