Again, WidyaKartika University’s student won an achievement. This time, it was done by Nita S. Oktavia and Christian Winarko. Both are students of English Department (S1). They became winners in the Centre for Language and Culture (CLC) Essay Competition 2013, organized by UPT Center Language and Culture,Ten November Technology Institute (ITS) Surabaya.

This activity was done in commemoratingnational heroine, R. A. Kartini. In the event, with the theme “Kartini’s Effort to Empower Indonesian Women and The Implementation in This Global Era”, Nita Oktavia won the first prize. She set aside 77 other participants from number of campuses in Surabaya. In fact, the girl who lives in Lebak Permaiwas even able to beat host participants who only got runner-up to 2nd winner,while Christian Winarkowas successful to get 3rd runner-up.

Nita explained, short preparation had become a challenge for her. Participants were given two-week deadline to complete the essay. At the same time, classeswere also so dense. “So she must be able to manage time for making essay, going to class, finishing tasks, and preparing mid-term,” she said. She admitted, in preparingthe essays, her friends and she were advised by Yohanes KurniawanWinardi, S.S., M.Pd., one of English Department’s lecturers.

The same thing was also said by Christian. In that competition, there were two stages to go through. After the script selection process, 10 of the participants who were qualifiedhad to make a presentation before the jury. The explanation was performed directly without any help of media, including presentation slides. “Well, here, all the theory learned in college is very useful. Including how we deliver our argument, “said the bespectacled man.

The success of Uwika’s students was also appreciated by CLC UPT Language and Culture Center of ITSChairman, Dr. KartikaNuswantara, M.Pd. According to him, it was an honor to know four of the six winners were students of ITS. In ITS itself, there was no major that specifically discussed English. “But Uwikahas it, so they deserve to win. But in ITS, even though there is no particular study program, students can make good long essays, “said the bespectacled woman as it is published in ITS’s website.
